Significant changes are afoot in New Barnet with the redevelopment of the old gas works site, creating the Victoria Quarter with new housing and leisure centre.
However, plans for the controversial “gateway” development in Albert Road and Victoria Road have yet to be finalised and the public only has a few more days to respond. The development will transform the area, with buildings of four to eight stories, overshadowing the neighbouring low-rise Victorian streets. Here is a summary of the proposal:
- Demolition of the existing residential and non-residential buildings (1 to 9 Victoria Road, 15 to 23 Victoria Road and 1A, 2 and 2A Albert Road)
- Construction of 110 residential units
- 623sqm of commercial/retail/office floorspace
- Creation of new publically accessible open spaces and pedestrian routes together with associated access, servicing, car parking, cycle parking and landscaping.
You can see plans and background information here and full details are on the council website where you have until Monday 6th March to post comments.
