Having only opened in May 2014 this branch of Boyden’s Kitchen already seems like a hub of the community. On our visit on a cold morning in December an encouragingly mixed crowd were enjoying hot drinks and brunch dishes with some regulars being welcomed by name by the staff – a quality it shares with another notable local newcomer The Courthouse Café (see entry).
This is the third café set up by Anna Boyden and partner chef Ben Harrison with other branches in Friern Barnet and East Finchley. Our local branch in Potter’s Road New Barnet is managed by Tim Charlesworth with Harrison beavering away behind the scenes, the pair fizzing with enthusiasm. The place has a refreshingly urban industrial feel (for our sedate suburb) with the emphasis on fine local produce. They take pride in serving Chash Teas (Golders Green), Campbell and Syme coffee roasters in East Finchley and Jeffries Vintage Drinks from Edmonton. They also seem very excited to have discovered Barnet butchers Moore and Sons (see entry).
My friend (fortunate in living a couple of minutes’ walk away) enjoyed poached eggs on toast with bacon, whereas I couldn’t resist trying the eggs Benedict and then succumbed to a slice a ginger cake. The cooking is seriously good. Prepared each morning, the hollandaise sauce has a well judged vinegary edge and the eggs had perfectly runny yolks. The cake was just as impressive. Dark, dense and spicy, and anointed with sharp lemon icing – perfect for a mid winter treat. Other tempting items on the menu included burritos, club sandwiches, soup of the day (butternut squash, yellow pepper and lentil on our visit), a tasty sounding ‘avo, feta and lime’ salad, American pancakes and a large range of pastries and cakes. Including tea and coffee, my blow out came to £15 and C’s more modest brunch with one hot drink came to about £7.50.
Boyden’s Kitchen also runs evening events such as monthly Friday Retreat (seated massages, reflexology, aromatherapy and BYO wine), but more are planned. Follow them on social media to keep up to date.
