“Welcome to the Friern Barnet & District Local History Society. We are a young society but we are active, not only in researching the past, but recording the present for future historians.

Our founder, John Donovan, lived in Friern Barnet between 1966 and 1995. He became concerned that nothing was being done to record and preserve the history of the area and before long there would be nobody left who remembered it. He decided to start a local history society and in late 1999 he gathered together a few like-minded people and the Society was formed. We had our first public meeting in September 2000, at the former Friern Barnet Town Hall, and by the end of that year we had a membership of over 100.

It was named “Friern Barnet and District” as a reflection of its interest in not only the area covered by the former Friern Barnet Urban District Council but also the neighbouring areas of New Southgate, North Finchley and Whetstone.
Our aims are to encourage the preservation of things of local interest, to study and record local history and to arrange lectures on topics of local and general historical interest.

We publish a Newsletter four times a year and we produce a number of publications on various topics.
We hold ten public meetings a year and occasionally organise walks around the area.”

“Barnet Education Arts Trust absolutely loves to make music! Whether you are a young classical, jazz or rock musician we have bands and groups at our three music centres (located in East Barnet, Finchley and Hendon). If you sing we have choirs, and if you are a teacher we have training opportunities and advice. We can hire out orchestral instruments if you are having lessons through us with one of our 170 qualified and CRB checked fabulous teachers. We stage concerts regularly, every Summer we organise a seven night festival at the Arts Depot for all our schools, and every five years we hold a musical extravaganza at the Royal Albert Hall. We also work in with seven other North and West London music hubs (Music8London). If you are three years or older we have something for you!”

For example, there are organised holidays and weekend breaks where members from across the country get together to enjoy discos, day trips, sports or just relaxing! Members also meet up for parties, meals out, bowling, quizzes and other events where the emphasis is on having a good time.

Barnet Plus meets on Sundays from 8.15 pm at Discovery Hall, 1 Stevenson Close, Netherlands Road, New Barnet, EN5 1DR, just two minutes from Oakleigh Park Station and ten minutes from bus routes 184, 307 and 326.

“Our Local History Society helps you find more about Barnet’s past and meet other people who enjoy history.

Barnet Record Society was formed in 1927 after a group of local people became concerned that Barnet’s past was being lost and decided to start a collection of documents and objects relating to the history of Barnet and the surrounding areas. The Society’s first exhibition was held in the Barnet Council Chamber. However, as the years passed, the collection grew, and on 19 March 1938 it was given a permanent home at 31 Wood Street, where it has remained. After discovering that people thought the word ‘record’ indicated a music society, the name was changed in 1967 to Barnet & District Local History Society. It is now ‘Barnet Museum and Local History Society’.”
